Jinja Bureau: Hydropower, the Nile and Fisheries

Industry, water and the people who live between them

Jinja carries the dams, the factories and the fishing landings. Our desk covers what industry does to the river, and what the river still gives to households.

Beat
Hydropower, industrial effluent, fisheries, sugar-belt land
Area served
Jinja District
Desk lead
Moses Ekwaru

The Jinja desk covers Nalubaale and Kiira, the sugar belt around the district, industrial effluent, and the Lake Victoria fishing landings that feed the towns.

We follow water quality reports, factory discharge complaints, and the enforcement patrols on the lake. Fishers tell us first when a rule changes on paper but not on the water.

Industrial health is part of this beat too. Factory injuries are rarely reported in a national paper, so we log them from the district health facility record and the family.

What is working

Landing sites with a working committee and a cold chain are losing much less fish, and the price to the fisher held steady across the season we tracked.
